With the Copenhagen climate conference being held, even if todays cars aren't really the biggest problem when it comes to climate change, everyone must still wonder what the future holds for petrol cars. Especially enthousiasts like myself.
When I finished highschool in '05 and was considering what college to go to I considered but explicitly chose not to go study car engineering technology. My reasoning then was because I did not have a passion for hightech modern alternative energy cars of the future (or whatever other future transportation), I only had a passion for the late 80's 90's and early 00's petrol cars of my youth and I saw no future in them. + my dad nagging to me not to mix a hobby and study/work. I don't know if I made the right decision, future transportation or perhaps lack thereof actually really does intrigue me now, but I ended up studying nothing technical at all.
The e85 buzz(rather small over here in the Netherlands) a few years back got me pretty excited. From the beginning I saw it as one transition solution untill we gradually step over to the aforementioned 'hightech modern alternative energy cars of the future' but perhaps it means a longer future for my beloved 80's, 90's and early 00's petrol cars as well.
When I'm 60 years old (if I reach that age) of course most of them will be recycled but I still hope to be able to drive a by then classic petrol sports car (with vintage quality aftermarket parts ^_^)for recreational purposes. Just like my father still rides his horse and carriage every now and then for his own nostalgic reasons.
Hopefully without people holding a grudge against me for poluting, who knows how people will feel about exhaust fumes from a flame spitting screamer pipe then.
Time will tell.
